University of Miami SWE

The University of Miami College of engineering was founded sixty years ago under University President Bowman Foster Ashe. It consisted of four hundred undergrads, all of whom were men. It wasn't until nearly four decades later the University of Miami section of the Society of Women engineers was founded. Since its birth, UM SWE has been empowering young women in South Florida to pursue, and succeed in a career in engineering. Today nearly thirty percent of our undergraduate class are women while, the national average is about nineteen percent.

It seems that over the past few years, UM SWE could do no wrong. In the 2005-2006 school year, we received a school wide award for our annual Outreach Experience event; naming it the best program held at the University of Miami by a small student organization. Our Outreach Experience: Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, has been our most longstanding and prized event in SWE history. We bring up to 150 high school girls from the surrounding Miami area for a full day event, whose purpose is to encourage them to choose a career path in engineering. In our 2006-2007 school year we received a national SWE award for most increased membership. We also had the honor of hosting a speaker event with Judith Mchale; who, at the time, was the CEO and President of Discovery Communications.

This year, we are the proud hosts of Region D Conference 2008. In hosting regional conference, we will be deemed as the only small student organization in the University of Miami to hold an event of this magnitude.

We owe our overwhelming success to our dedicated volunteers, and those are advocates for women in engineering and have supported us through the years. These are the people who have made our programming possible and have changed the face of women in engineering.
